Authentic Balinese Healing Experiences (Not the Tourist Version)

In today’s fast paced world, many of us feel overwhelmed, disconnected, and drained. It’s no surprise that the global focus on health and wellness continues to grow as people search for ways to restore balance in their busy lives. More than ever, there is a desire to step away from daily routines every now and then to disconnect from our world and reconnect with ourselves.

How to recharge on a deeper, more meaningful level?

This is where the magic of Ubud can help!

How Ubud Became Bali’s Center for Healing

Named after the Balinese word “Ubad,” meaning medicine, Ubud has been a sacred healing center for centuries. Indonesians and international travelers alike have long visited Ubud and surrounding areas to meet healers, pray at ancient temples, and bathe in holy springs.

Today, Ubud has blossomed into a well known global center for holistic well being — and you don’t need a luxury retreat or a big budget to experience its benefits. Even setting aside just one day of your holiday for reflection and personal growth can have a profound effect.

Many visitors now not only want to learn about Balinese culture, but to experience the Balinese for themselves. Balinese traditions can still be related to modern living and be incredibly helpful. Secret Cave Meditation and Holy Spring Water Purification Experience, designed by Ubud Traveler, was created to meet the growing interest in authentic Balinese self care and healing practices. These two methods take place at sacred locations used for meditation and purification for generations.

Understanding the Balinese Meditation Experience

The Balinese have three main meditation methods, traditionally taught from preschool age by family members and school teachers. These simple yet powerful techniques are why Balinese people tend to remain grounded and emotionally balanced throughout their lives.

Our owners felt that sharing Balinese meditation at locations where mindfulness has been practiced for centuries would leave a lasting impact on each guest. The first meditation site is a tranquil, ancient space — originally a 9th-century monastery. In the cool, gentle morning light, you’ll sit inside caves carved by the monks and be guided through the three Balinese meditation methods.

How Balinese Water Purification Cleanses the Mind and Body

Balinese Water Purification is another traditional form of meditation. The Balinese believe that water is one of the most important elements for life, as the human body is made of 70% water. The purpose of water purification is to cleanse and purify the body using fresh, untouched spring water straight from the earth.

It is believed that built-up emotion, stress, and negative energy can be released during this ritual, helping the mind move forward with clarity and peace.

How This Experience Has Helped Other Travelers

Lydia, Spain — May 2025
“We began the day early with a guided meditation at a sacred temple where you can truly feel the spirituality of the place — and best of all, we had it to ourselves. Afterwards, we visited Pura Tirta Empul for purification. Dharma guided us with such authenticity and care. I 100% recommend Ubud Traveler.”

Liza, Australia — March 2025
“We had the most beautiful experience doing cave meditation with Darma, then water purification. It was a day of complete soul searching and healing after losing my mum just weeks earlier. Darma’s presence is a blessing and I feel so full of life and gratitude.”

Melukat is a traditional Balinese purification ritual that uses water, prayers, and offerings to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit. Melukat comes from the Balinese word lukat, which means “to clean and purify.” Our licensed & local guides follow the Melukat process which is why this Ubud Traveler is considered authentic.

In short, all Melukat rituals involve water purification, but not all water purification ceremonies are considered Melukat. It’s a spiritually guided, culturally rich Balinese tradition.

What training do the local guides undertake?

Our guides come from the village where the holy spring temple is located, and they have been visiting the temple and practicing the rituals since childhood. The knowledge and techniques are passed down from generation to generation, ensuring a deep understanding of the spiritual traditions.

Since April 2025, guides are also required to hold a license, which means they have undertaken additional training to safely and respectfully assist tourists during their Bali experience. This combination of ancestral knowledge and formal training ensures an authentic and secure experience for all visitors.
